More Than Just Services: The Heart of Caregiving

Peter Kozachuk
CEO Yorkshire Care Experts
After 18 years in care, I felt that my knowledge should be applied in practical ways, benefiting clients and young carers starting their care journey.
While working with John, a palliative care patient, he asked me one day why I didn't start my own care business. I remember the curiosity in his eyes. Surprised by the question, I asked him, 'Why should I?' John's answer was simple: 'Because you're good at it.' His words, though few, resonated deeply, and I knew that he was right.
I began taking the necessary steps towards this goal of working for myself. My registration with the Care Quality Commission was another encouraging moment.
When I told my inspector about my plans, he paused, a thoughtful expression on his face, and said, 'It won't happen overnight. It might take six months to a year.' Little did I know, it would be seven years before I started my business.
After my mother was diagnosed with dementia, those seven years were dedicated to supporting her. She passed away on March 29, 2025. This experience taught me that care is not a simple matter. The people I cared for during those 18 years needed more than just services; they needed emotional support. Sometimes a smile, a gentle touch, or a listening ear meant more than any procedure.
